### Summary An authenticated command injection in OPNsense 26.7.7 allows a user with only the privilege to execute arbitrary shell commands with root-level privileges. The vulnerability happens when an attacker controlled firmware mirror URL is stored through . Then it is subsequently evaluated when the firmware information is retrieved from: (Or consequently anytime the firmware page of the webui loads). ### Details The OPNsense firmware management API allows a user with to modify the firmware mirror config. accepts a mirror URL from the attacker and the shell command substitution characters can survive validation and become part of the stored mirror url value. Whenever the firmware info is retrieved, the backend invokes . The function in the update utility processes the mirror value using: This causes embedded shell command substitution to be executed instead of treating the mirror URL strictly as data. The vulnerable execution chain is: 1. POST , store the crafted mirror URL. 2. GET , request firmware information. 3. Firmware backend invokes . 4. evaluates the stored URL. 5. The injected shell command executes with root privileges. The attacker can invoke both API endpoints using the same restricted firmware only API key, without an unrestricted administrator account. The payload persists in the firmware configuration and is evaluated again when the affected firmware information operation runs. Suspected root cause: Improper handling of untrusted firmware mirror configuration data before shell evaluation. **Confirmed affected system**: OPNsense Community Edition 26.7.7, amd64. The exact vulnerable version range and first patched release have not yet been established. --- AI was used during vulnerability discovery as well as some source code analysis. I independently reproduced and verified the vulnerability on an isolated OPNsense 26.7.7 VM, including the execution of the injected command and creation of the root owned file. If this vulnerability is confirmed and
