## Summary OPNsense has a deny privilege intended to block configuration writes. The normal mutable model controller save path enforces this deny privilege, but several API controllers persist configuration manually through without first calling . An authenticated user explicitly marked read-only can therefore make persistent configuration changes when they also hold the affected page privilege. Confirmed affected paths on OPNsense : | ID | Read-only user privileges | Endpoint / component | Persistent change | Final status | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | OV-016 | , | | Firewall alias content | Confirmed | | OV-017 | , | | Unbound DNSBL blocklist | Confirmed | | OV-018 | , | | Netflow configuration | Confirmed | | OV-019 | , | | Global IPsec enabled flag | Confirmed | | OV-020 | , | | Internal CRL creation/update | Confirmed | | OV-021 | , | | OpenVPN export preset | Confirmed | | OV-029 | , | | Internal CRL deletion | Confirmed | ## Details The intended read-only enforcement exists in the base API controller: The normal mutable model save path calls this check: The affected controllers bypass this path and call directly: The root cause is that read-only enforcement is attached to one controller helper, not to the global act of persisting configuration. ## PoC For each case, create a temporary WebGUI user with plus the affected page privilege, log in as that user, and send the request. | ID | Low-privilege request | Observed result | | --- | --- | --- | | OV-016 | with | Normal alias model write was denied, but returned and root readback showed the address persisted | | OV-017 | with a disposable DNSBL policy and | Normal DNSBL add was denied, but returned and root readback showed the domain persisted | | OV-018 | changing from to | and root readback showed the changed value | | OV-019 | | and root readback showed the global IPsec enabled flag changed | | OV-020 | | Internal CRL was created; root readback showed the test description and serial | | OV-029 | | Inte
